George married Sarah A. Blair in 1837.

George Ewing Burney was born in Tennessee, moved to Missouri in 1834, Arkansas in 1836, and then to Texas in 1837.

He was elected to the Third Texas Legislature from the Milam district and introduced the bill that established McLennan, Bell and Falls Counties.

He introduced bills granting charters for the Waco Suspension Bridge, the Waco Tap Railroad and the Waco Manufacturing Company in which he was president.

He settled in Waco in 1850, and was elected to the 5th Legislature from the Waco district. He served in the Texas Senate during the Civil War years and was the Senate member of the committee that investigated the burning of Brenham in 1866, conducted much of the investigation personally, and made active efforts to secure redress for the victims.

Burney was a Methodist and died at his home near Waco in 1878.
