From Glen Birbaum (my third cousin [same great-great grandparents]:
John (Johann) Birnbaum and Mechtilde Ophardt (Op Haardt) were marred at the Evangelical church of Repelen-Baerl in the Rheinland provice of Prussia (Germany). Their marriage record indicates that John's parents were Tilmann Birnbaum (b 4 NOV 1806, d 8 JUN 1898) and C(K)atharina Plankstiel (b 1812, d 1873);...The record also states that Tilmann and Katharina were living in the town of Vluyn, which lies southwest of Repelen. John and Mechtilde were both residing in the town of Boschheide, a hamlet in Repelen parish. Mechtilde's father was also living in Boschheide. John and Mechtilde left Prussia with their first child, Tillman, from the port of Antwerp, Belgium on the"David Hoadley", and arrived in New York Harbor on 18 NOV 1857. Tillman died on the trip over or shortly after they arrived in America at the age of 11 months.
They traveled to Illinois and settled in Logan County, on the south side of Mt. Pulaski--Elkhart Road. Here four of ther eight children were born: Tillman (1858), Elizabeth (1860), Gertrude (1861), and Matilda (1863). On December 28, 1863, the family purchased an 80 acre farm in Section 21 of East Lincoln Township. The amount paid for this farm was $1,280, or $16 per acre. They felt this new location would provide a few more cents for their farm products since it was close to the county seat of Lincoln, IL Also, there was some higher ground on this property that they hoped would produce a good crop, even in wet years.. Here, the last three children were born: Henry (1865), John C. (1867) and Maria (1870) the older children were said to have sat on the back fence and watched Abraham Lincoln's funeral train pass less than a mile away from their farm on the morning of 3 MAY 1865. John became a member of of St. John German Evangelical Church in Lincoln in 1867. Tillman, Elizabeth, Gertrude, and Matilda were confirmed there; John C. and Maria were baptized there.
In 1872, two tragic events happened in the family. First, Maria passed away on 20 APR 1872, and later on 12 JUN, John passed away at the age of 41. The cause of death was not known in either case. Mechtilde remarried to Peter Kerstken in 1874. The couple had no children between them. Peter was a farmer and a democrat. He died in 1896. After his death, Mechtilde moved to Lincoln and resided at 529 N McLean ST. Mechtilde passed away in 1916 in Salinas, CA--where she had lived with her daughter, Matilda, for three years.
