Son of Dieter Sr and Josephine Daum/Damm/Dahm. He married Margarette Rathgeber on 12 April 1865 in Greene County, Illinois.

He founded Daum Station, Illinois which was located at the intersection of Providence Road and Daum Road. It had a general store, post office, blacksmith shop, small stockyard and loading facility for livestock and an elevator. The Litchfield, Carlinville and Western railroad line started at Litchfield and ran through many small towns, including Carrollton, and established a station at Daum.

The land was originally owned by Adam Rothgeber in 1851, the father of Margarette. The property later was named Daum Station Farms by Charles Christian Daum Jr. who is the current owner of the land.
