Funeral services were held here Saturday afternoon for Carl J. Gehrls, 85, a life-long resident of this area. The Rev Arthur Tinge officiated at the services held in Zion United Church of Christ. Irma Strackbein was organist and Gayle Mess and Shirlee Fehling sang hymns. Burial was in the Lowden cemetery.
Lewis Strackbein, Melvin Meier, Joey Gehrls, Ralph Dircks, Harold Meyer and Eldie Gehrls were pallbearers. Mrs Hugo Gehrls and Martha Gehrls were in charge of flowers.
Mr Gehrls died Thursday at Lowe's Rest Home here where he had been residing the past several months.
The deceased was born May 9, 1882 near Lowden to Jocham and Elizabeth Frahm Gehrls. He was educated in the Lowden schools.
On Nov. 28, 1906 he was married to Ida Meier of Lowden. They farmed at the northeast edge of Lowden for a number of years. Following his retirement he continued to live on the farm with his son Harry and wife until several months ago.
He was a life-long member of Zion church.
He is survived by four sons, Emil, Pekin, Ill. and Ralph, Harry and Edwin, of Lowden; one daughter, Mrs Marvin (Minnie) Rutenbeck, Olin; 10 grandchildren and 12 great-grandchildren.
Preceding him in death were his wife, five brothers and one sister.
