Vernon Volney Vine was born in Green Lake, Wisconsin to Peter O. Vine and his wife Carina. He had a brother Oakley Waldo Vine (1883-1912). His father Peter was a farmer who was born in New York. When Vernon was 10 years old, the family moved to Minnesota where he resided on a farm until he was 20 years of age. Vernon married Helena (Unknown) Vine and lived in Seaforth, MN in 1910 and later (per the 1920 census) lived in Gary, Deuel, South Dakota where he worked as a carpenter; his wife Helena is listed in the 1920 census. He also worked as a depot agent and served as chief operator at Seaforth and Gary, South Dakota and ran a lumber yard at Gary for 10 years before becoming a farmer. His wife Helena died sometime between 1920 and 1926, and Vernon re-married Mabel (Crabbe) Spain Vine in 1927. She had one son, Richard Reynolds Spain by her first marriage. Her son Richard worked on the farm for his stepfather and even legally changed his name to Richard Spain Vine about 1929. Vernon and Mabel adopted a daughter, Velma Virginia Vine. Vernon's second wife, Mabel, died after an operation in a Minneapolis hospital in April 1940. Vernon re-married once again, this time to Cora Rosten on February 8, 1944 in Canby. Vernon lived for many years in Porter, MN where he was a farmer, like his father before him. In about 1953, he had a stroke and became bedridden in his home in Porter for several years; he had another stroke in 1958, and was taken to Swenson Memorial Hospital where he died. Services took place at the Porter Lutheran church with the Rev. L. J. Inglebret officiating, and burial was made in the Canby Cemetery. He was survived by his adopted children, Richard Vine of North Hollywood, California and Mrs. Gaylord Fiskum (Viginia Velma) of Quincy, California.
