OZRO CHILDS TRIPP, PIONEER OF VALLEY PAID LAST TRIBUTE
Hemet Stores Closed During Funeral Rites For Man Who Lived Here 60 Years
Death's hand thinned the ranks of Hemet-San Jacinto Valley pioneers again this week when Ozro Childs Tripp died Monday evening at his residence at the corner of Latham avenue and Ramona street, after an illness of ten days. Born in Los Angeles March 21, 1859, he had made his home in Hemet and vicinity for 60 years.
His death leaves only one of his generation of the prominent Tripp family still living. This survivor is Mrs. Quitman Reed of Sage, a sister. Two brothers, William and Shasta preceded him in death during the past few years.
The death of Ozro Tripp removed one of the few remaining persons intimately acquainted with the local incidents and characters of Helen Hunt's Ramona story.
He was the son of Samuel V. Tripp, the San Jacinto justice of the peace who tried Sam Temple for the killing of Juan Diego (Allesandro) in 1883.
The deceased was for many years associated with his brothers in the cattle business and owned extensive acreage south of Hemet. He was once a candidate for county supervisor, being defeated by John Shaver of San Jacinto in a close race.
Practically every business house in Hemet was closed during the hour of the funeral Wednesday afternoon. The service at the Kingham mortuary was largely attended. The Rev. William Pearce officiated and William Elmer Kingham was soloist. Interment was in the Valley cemetery.
In 1884 he was united in marriage to Mattie V. Logsdon at San Jacinto. To this union were born five sons. Joe died at the age of four. Robert died at birth. Three sons survive.
Survivors are his wife, Mattie V. Tripp, three sons. Walter of Porterville, Chester Edward and Clyde Stanley of Hemet; nine half brothers and sisters, Dan Tripp of San Jacinto, Laura Clark of Hemet, Judd Tripp of Visalia, Lulu Miller of Aguanga, Lena Robertson of Sage, Wallace Tripp of Holbrook, Ariz., Frank and Ed Tripp of Dinuba and Clinton Tripp of Modesto; four grandchildren, Zelma Daschnerof Laguna, and Carl, Richard and Howard Tripp of Hemet; one great grandchild, Clarence Daschner of Laguna. Mr. Tripp leaves also numerous nephews and nieces. Six of the nephews acted as pallbearers.
