Daniel was born in England, the son of Mary Ann Sizer and Samuel Howard. Moving to Michigan as a young man, he married first wife Eliza Rose, who died in October 1868. Undoubtably raising his nine year old son was an important consideration, for after only two months, Daniel married Hattie Chase on December 24, 1868.
Family relation, Harlan Howard, purchased the Hanover County estate of "Aldingham" from Capt. Charles William Dabney in 1875. The climate did not agree with Harlan's wife, so he left Virginia and Daniel took over Aldingham. Purchasing Swananna, another old Hanover County home, Daniel only lived at Aldingham until 1880. However, Aldingham remained in the Howard family for the next 80+ years and Daniel is buried next to the main house.
