An early Hollywood resident, Lane built one of the oldest homes in Hollywood, now known as the famed "Magic Castle," a haven for well-known and up-and-coming magicians. In 1872 Lane graduated from Ripon College and went to work as an associate editor for the Daily Evening Wisconsin newspaper and by 1886 had moved and settled in Redlands, California. While in Redlands he helped establish the Union Bank of Redlands where he also worked as a cashier. He then moved to Portland, Oregon, organized and served as president of the Multnoman County Bank. He eventually moved back to Los Angeles and he and his wife, Katherine Azubah Glynn a teacher and author, became well known in Hollywood. Lane invested in real estate in the San Joaquin and San Fernando valleys and in 1907 was one of the backers of the new town of Corcoran, California. He worked with H.J. Whitley, General Harrison Otis and Arthur Letts, all well-known in Southern California. Corcoran later became home to the California State Prison. In 1909 Lane began building his Hollywood home, ‘Holly Chateau' a large, seventeen room mansion with a roof garden and sun parlor. In 1936 Lane became ill and eventually died of a stroke in his bedroom of the mansion. Katherine lived at the mansion until her death in 1945. Lane's mother Olive Pickett Lane-Wood (b. 1832; d. 1922) is also interred at this site.
