Anders Gjeldnes was one of the seven children born to Mr. and Mrs. Nils Gjeldnes of Stangvik, Norway, located on the country's west coast. Anders Gjeldnes changed his name to Andrew Jeldness when he immigrated to the United States. Here he mined in Michigan, Colorado and the Pacific Northwest. In the late 1880s, he was in the Okanagan area. Later, Andrew Jeldness owned the Bloomfield Mine, located near Jacksonville, Oregon.

Andrew had three brothers- Halvor, Ole and Olaus, who also came to this country and worked as miners. Ole eventually gave up mining and became a dairy farmer. Olaus Jeldness made a name for himself as a famous skier, referred to as "Champion of the 1890s" (Image 7971 Southern Oregon Historical Society's research library).
