Mrs. Emma Gertrude Spalding, 48, wife of Edward Bert Spalding, died Wednesday afternoon (2-3-1943) at 5 o'clock at her home on Pope's Creek. While she had been in failing health for several years, she was seriously ill only two weeks. Mrs. Spalding was a daughter of Albertus and Mary Etta Lee Abell, both deceased, and was born in the Penick section. She had made her home in this county all her life. She was a devoted wife and mother and a lifelong member of the Catholic Church. Her husband and seven children survive, two daughters, Mrs. Clarence Ryan (Martha Aileen) and Mrs. Emma Jewell (Jewell was her middle name), both of this county, and five sons. The latter are: Tillson Lawrence Spalding, this county, Brother Burton Spalding of St. Rose Priory, Joseph David Spalding of Fort Knox, William and Oscar Lee Spalding at home. Five sisters survive, Mrs. E.P. Ryan of Louisville, Mrs. John Ball of Washington Co., Mrs. Ambrose Warren, Mrs. Hagan Dye, and Mrs. Granville Noel, all of this county; also two brothers, Roy and Bert Abell of Louisville, and several grand-children. Funeral services will be conducted at St. Augustine Church tomorrow morning at 9 o'clock by the Rev. Joseph D. Gettelfinger, and burial will be in St. Augustine Cemetery.
