LAKE ELMORE - Donna Joslyn West, 67, passed away peacefully on Saturday, July 3, 2010 following a courageous and dignified battle against Alzheimer's disease.
Born in Montpelier on Feb. 28, 1943, Donna was the daughter of Malcolm and Dorothy Joslyn.
Donna spent her childhood on family farms in Waterbury and Waitsfield. She graduated from Waterbury High School in 1961. She received her bachelor's degree in Education from Johnson State College in 1966, and later her master's degree in Early Childhood Education. While attending Johnson, Donna met her husband of 45 years, Robert West, whom she married in 1965. Donna taught first grade at Stowe Elementary School from 1966 to 1970. She later taught nursery school at Puffer United Methodist Church and in 1982 became one of the first public kindergarten teachers in Morrisville, where she taught until her retirement in 2003.
Donna was a caring wife, loving mother, and cherished grandmother. She is survived by her husband Robert, and their three children, Jennifer and her husband Paul Tremblay of Rochester, N.Y. and their son Etienne; Andrew West and his wife Shannon of Salem, N.H. and their children Connor and Noelle; and Gregory West and his wife Melissa of Rutland, and their children Kaia and Fasika. She is also survived by her mother, Dorothy Joslyn, of Burlington; and her sisters, Diane Cass and her husband Roger of Rochester, N.Y., Clara Peterson and her husband Garth of South Burlington, and Ramie Scukanec and her husband John of Vancouver, Wash. Donna was a kind aunt to her nieces, nephews, grand-nieces, and grandnephews and a thoughtful and generous friend to many. She was predeceased by her father, Malcolm Joslyn, in 2008.
In addition to enriching the lives of her children and grandchildren in immeasurable ways, Donna was a well-respected educator who was honored as the district's Teacher of the Year. Her life mission was to nurture and advocate for each child who passed through her classroom doors. Donna loved to spend time walking her golden retrievers, gardening, and volunteering in the community, especially on the board of Lamoille County Home Health and as a member of the Elmore United Methodist Church.
Friends and family can share memories of Donna during visiting hours on Wednesday, July 7, 2010 at White-Fiess Funeral Home in Morrisville, from 5 to 8 p.m. A funeral service celebrating Donna's life will be held at 10 a.m. on Thursday, July 8, 2010 at the Elmore United Methodist Church in Lake Elmore, followed by interment at Lake Elmore Cemetery.
