The son of George & Lydia (Liebernecht) Dellinger, in 1860 he was a laborer living in Hellam Township, York County, Pennsylvania, the township of his birth. He stood 5' 6" tall and had dark hair and blue eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York March 25, 1864, and mustered into federal service at Harrisburg May 7 (no explanation for rather long period between enlistment and federal muster) as a private with Co. H, 187th Pennsylvania Infantry. He was wounded sometime during 1864 (exact date and place not stated) when a bursting shell sent a fragment into his left chest 1.5" above his heart and lodged in the right shoulder blade. At the same time, a second fragment slashed his side. His family physician said, "That his life was preserved is a miracle." He honorably discharged with his company August 3, 1865.

He married Mary Arnold August 23, 1866, near Wrightsville, York County, and fathered John F. (b. 12/08/66, d. 10/01/70), George S. (b. 11/22/68, d. 10/01/70), Catherine A. "Kady" (b. 09/12/70, d. 04/11/72), Ida M. (b. 12/10/72 - married George J. Silar), Lydia Ann (b. 01/13/75 - married a Kinard), Mary Jane (b. 05/20/77 - married Harry H. Minnich), and Charles Chauncy (b. 01/03/83).

Cause of death is listed as "anginia pectoris." November 19 is also reported as day of death, but the date from his death certificate is shown above.
