John Freese was born October 8, 1806, in Creagerstown, Frederick County, Maryland, the son of John and Anna Maria Schrupp Freeze. On May 14, 1829, in Coshocton County, Ohio, he was married to Nancy Jane McFarland, daughter of John and Pamelia Cake McFarland. They were the parents of 9 children: Mary Jane, William Henry, Joseph Alexander, Martha Permelia, George Washington, John Calvin, James Victor, an infant and Ruey Ann Freese. John passed away February 26, 1879, near Pike's Peak, Brown County, Indiana, and was buried in Mt. Zion Cemetery, Van Buren Township, Brown County, Indiana.


From the Autobiography of Walter L. Benton, July, 1878:

"In the year 1876, Walter Benton was married to Mrs. Mary J. Daly, widow of Mr. John Daly, and daughter of John and Nancy Freese. She came with her father's family from Ohio in 1855, and settled in Brown County, Indiana, four miles west of Christiansburg. To Mr. and Mrs. Freese there were born five sons and two daughters, viz: William, Joseph, Calvin, George, James, Mary and Ruey, all of whom are now living except James...."


Death notice for John Freese from the Brownstown Banner of March 6, 1879:

"John Freese, father of Rev. Walter Benton's present wife, died at his home near Pike's Peak, in Brown County, on Wednesday morning of last week, at the age of 73 years."
