OBITUARY :
MR. WILLIAM CARL "BILL" McCLEAF, 81, of 13365 Flohr Lane, Blue Ridge Summit, PA, passed away at 7:45 A.M., Friday, November 12, 2010 in Chambersburg Hospital, Chambersburg, PA.

Born January 2, 1928 in Rouzerville, PA, he was the son of the late Frank Benjamin, Sr. and Annie Mae (Hovis) McCleaf. He spent his early life in the Rouzerville area.

Mr. McCleaf attended Rouzerville Academy, then Washington Township High School and later received his G.E.D. from Gettysburg.

He served in the United States Army during World War II in Korea as a military policeman. He later was employed at Letterkenny Army Depot, Chambersburg, PA, at Fort Ritchie, MD as a consolidated property officer, as a commanding officer for Maryland National Guards at Cascade, MD and the Army Reserves where he retired as Full Colonel.

He and his wife, the late Mrs. Margaret S. (Smith) McCleaf, were married September 20, 1956 in Winchester, VA. They had lived at their present residence since 1960. She died August 14, 2009.

Mr. McCleaf was a member of Church of the Transfiguration, Blue Ridge Summit, where he served as an acolyte and lay reader. He also was a 59 year member of B.P.O. Elks Lodge #731, Waynesboro, where he served as Exalted Ruler from 1980-1981, on the Board of Directors for many years and as Lodge Inner Guard for several decades. He also was a member of Joe Stickell American Legion Post #15, Eagles Club, Inc., William Max McLaughlin VFW Post #695 and Owls Club, all of Waynesboro, Acacia Lodge # 155 F. & A.M. of Thurmont, MD, Harrisburg Consistory, Zembo Shrine, Franklin County Shrine Club, Blue Ridge Summit Lions Club where he served as Past President, Past National Commander and National Property Officer of 29th Division Association, Past National Commander of Lantern Post #729 of Cascade, MD, Landis McCleaf Detachment of the Marine Corp League, Chambersburg, PA and National AARP.

While serving as national commander of the 29th Division Association, Mr. McCleaf had the honor of participating in the wreath laying ceremony at the Tomb of the Unknowns at Arlington National Cemetery on May 18, 2003.

Mr. McCleaf enjoyed hunting.

He is survived by his daughter, Lisa R. Rowe of Waynesboro; two granddaughters, Kati R. Rowe and Amanda B. (wife of Corey) Stull, both of Waynesboro; one sister, Mary Ann Potter of Greencastle, PA; one brother, Thomas M. McCleaf of Smithsburg, MD; and a number of nieces and nephews.

In addition to his parents and wife, he was preceded in death by a son, Bradley C. McCleaf; and five brothers, Charles A. McCleaf, Frank B. McCleaf, Jr., Robert H. McCleaf, Paul F. McCleaf, and John R. McCleaf

Services will be held at 10:30 A.M., Tuesday, November 16, 2010 in Church of the Transfiguration, 13646 Summit Avenue, Blue Ridge Summit, with the Rev. Canon John McDowell officiating. Burial will follow in Bethel Church Cemetery, Cascade where graveside military honors will be conducted by the Honor Guard of Charles Nitterhouse VFW Post #1599, Chambersburg.

The family will receive friends from 6 to 8 P.M., Monday, in Grove-Bowersox Funeral Home, 50 South Broad Street, Waynesboro where Masonic memorial services will be held at 7:00 P.M.

In lieu of flowers, memorial contributions may be made to Church of the Transfiguration, P.O. Box B, Blue Ridge Summit, PA 17214.
