Valentine Zahniser Ball
September 11, 1835 - September 22, 1914

Son of William and Sarah (Zahniser) Ball.

Married Susannah Griffin Amerman, November 10, 1858 in Newaygo County, Michigan.

Children: Oscar F., 1859-; Caleb A., 1861-1907; Eugene, 1864-1882 and Elizabeth Idora, 1866-1944.

Married Mary Ann White, October 25, 1870 in Mercer County, PA. Together they had nine children.

He was a blacksmith, farmer and carpenter. He was also the Justice of the Peace at one time.

Grandpa Ball used two oxen, named Blue and Buck, to work the land. The oxen were more economical to use then horses because they could live off of grass, whereas horses had to have grain as well as the grass. Uncle Frank Ball told my dad that at one time, Grandpa Ball hitched one oxen and one horse together as a team.

One day Grandpa V. Z. Ball drove his team of oxen to the Neosho River overflow near Chetopa, Kansas. He located some poles known as "Lodge" poles, which he used to build a pen for his cattle. The trip took him one day to get there and one day to get back home.

V. Z. Ball built his first blacksmith shop just east of the old house. Later he moved the shop to where the steel bins are now located. After my parents moved to the farm, daddy unearthed many old horseshoes from the original site.

Sometime after that, Grandpa had a "peddler's wagon" or as Hazel Wall said, "My Mother Josephine referred to as, Father drove a hucksters wagon to Mineral." They sent their extra butter and eggs along to sell, as well as other food stuff, hay, etc. Grandpa Ball and his family would butcher livestock in the winter time and he would take the meat to Mineral to sell.
