The son of Joseph & Catherine (Rosser) Lent, in 1860 he was a carpenter living with and/or working for master carpenter Lewis Drorbaugh near Davidsburg, Dover Township, York County, Pennsylvania, although the 1863 draft registration has him a resident of neighboring Warrington Township. He stood 5' 5" tall and had dark hair and brown eyes.

A Civil War veteran, he enlisted in York September 9, 1861, mustered into federal service there September 19 as a private with Co. H, 87th Pennsylvania Infantry. While on a scout near Winchester, Virginia, in 1863, his feet suffered frostbite, and they bothered him the rest of his life. He honorably discharged at term's end October 13, 1864, in York.

He married Catherine Laird January 29, 1865, and fathered Henry A. (b. 07/21/66), Edward J. (b. 02/28/69), Jesse A. (b. 03/07/71), Charles F. (b. 09/26/73), Lillie K. (b. 07/25/78), Katie E. (b. 07/15/81), Reuben E. (b. 07/23/84), Mary Emma (b. 02/23/87) and John Harrison (b. 03/16/91). In 1890, he lived in Warrington Township.
