While on a scout near Winchester, Virginia, in 1863, his feet suffered frostbite, and they bothered him the rest of his life. He honorably discharged at term's end October 13, 1864, in York.
He married Catherine Laird January 29, 1865, and fathered Henry A. (b. 07/21/66), Edward J. (b. 02/28/69), Jesse A. (b. 03/07/71), Charles F. (b. 09/26/73), Lillie K. (b. 07/25/78), Katie E. (b. 07/15/81), Reuben E. (b. 07/23/84), Mary Emma (b. 02/23/87) and John Harrison (b. 03/16/91). In 1890, he lived in Warrington Township.
