He was killed in action during or shortly after the sinking of the light cruiser USS Juneau (CL-52), on November 13, 1942. The Juneau participated in a number of naval engagements during the months-long Guadalcanal Campaign beginning in August 1942. Early in the morning of November 13, 1942, during the Naval Battle of Guadalcanal, the Juneau was severely damaged by a Japanese torpedo and forced to withdraw. While withdrawing from the battle, the ship was hit by another torpedo that caused a massive explosion and the ship quickly sank; only 10 members of her crew survived.

Twelve of the Siblings are linked and listed plus Ruby Winfred Crawley Lightfoot (1904-1984) that Find A Grave connections are being researched.
