Minnie Eckstorm was born in South Bend Minnesota to parents Theodor Eckstorm born 1826 in Skien Norway, died 1879 in Chicago, and Maria Dames born 1835 in Ireland, died 1916 in Chicago. Her father was one of 3 partners in Eckstorm Brothers and Brown, a retail store. At the time of the store in Madelia, there was also a store in Chicago at 39 Kinzie Street, near where Trump Towers stands now. Another store located in La Crosse WI burned in 1857, in addition to the South Bend store ( 1862 - 1872), and some records indicate a store in Janesville WI.in 1854.

Minnie was the eldest child. She and the next 6 children were born in South Bend Minn between 1859 and 1871 ( Christian J, Jennie/Jane K, Pauline O, Theodore Jr, Frederick, Lucinda D). In 1872 the family moved to Madelia, where Paul Frederick Theodore and his twin brother John Bernard Christian were born in 1873. Then in 1875, 6 months after Minnie's death from measles in May, her new born brother (?) died at one day old. These are the only Eckstorm family graves in Madelia. The family were members of the Trinity Lutheran Church in Madelia.

According to the Wantowan County Historical Society and Museum in Madelia, these were difficult times. The years 1872 - 1875 were marked by Indian conflicts and many people left the area. When folks returned in 1875, a grasshopper invasion devastated the farming for several years. The family was in Madelia from 1872 - 1877. The original Eckstorm Brothers and Brown store was destroyed in a fire in 1879, and the new building from 1916 is now the site of the City Hall.

In 1876 the 3 partners ( Theodore Eckstorm, his brother Paul F Eckstorm, and cousin John BC Brown, all of Norway) purchased a lot in Lakeview, now part of Chicago, and by 1877 they were living there. The family reason for the move was to get to be near better schools for the growing children.

There is a large burial plot for the Theodore Eckstorm family in Graceland Cemetery in Chicago. At this time it is not listed on Find a Grave. There is a separate plot in Graceland for Theodor's brother Paul F Eckstorm and his family, also not yet listed on find a grave.
