James Shields, a native of Ireland, came to America in the late 1700s. He migrated to Irwin Township, Venango County, Pennsylvania. It is there that he met and married Jane Martin, daughter of David and Nancy Martin, also natives of Ireland. David and Nancy were one of four families who were the first settlers of Irwin in 1799. After their marriage, James and Jane lived in Irwin for a time where their first four children were born and then moved westward in 1816, settling in Tuppers Plains, Ohio.
James and Jane were the parents of thirteen children: Nancy (Gray), Jane (Miller), Elizabeth (Dotterer), Margaret Jane (Hill), Marie (Hobart), Ephriam Harris, James Harvey, David Martin, Edward Douglas, Mary Ann (Hetzer), Sarah Ann (Rainier), Amanda (Gilbert) and Eliza Coaroline (Whaley) Shields.
