He was born March 24, 1925 in Ropesville to Herman and Oleta Coleman Abbe. He married his high school sweetheart, Berta Brown, in Morton. They celebrated their 60th wedding anniversary on Jan. 22, 2004. Mr. Abbe was the third generation to live in Cochran County. He attended Morton schools until he was drafted into the Armed Services during WWII in 1944. He received an honorary diploma from Morton High School in May 2003.
During his military service he served in the Philippine Islands and the occupation of Japan. During that time he had the honor of chauffeuring President Dwight D. Eisenhower, who at that time was a five-star gen eral. After receiving an honorable discharge in 1946, he returned to Morton to farm west of Morton until his retirement in 2000. He served on the Maple Cooperative Gin Board for 40 years. He was a pilot, an instructor, spray pilot, and taught many people how to fly. He moved to Levelland in 2001. He was a longtime member of the Eastside Church of Christ and after moving to Levelland he became a member of the Cactus Drive Church of Christ.
He is survived by, remembered and greatly missed by his wife, Berta; his sons, Mayland and wife, Mary, of Levelland, Lamell and wife, Linda, of Lubbock, and Mike and wife, Allene, of Morton; a daughter, Rhonda Bird and husband, Phil, of Levelland; seven grandchildren; four great-grandchildren; and a brother, Charles and his wife, Jean, of Morton.
