J.A. Bailey Died Today
Pioneer Missourian Passed Away at 2:35 This Afternoon at Home.
J.A. Bailey, a resident of East Atchison and vicinity for 72 years, died this afternoon at 2:35 o'clock, at his home in East Atchison.
Death followed a paralytic stroke, suffered shortly after 9:30 o'clock Saturday night.
Mr. Bailey, who was commonly known as "Doc" Bailey, was 83 years of age when he passed away.
He was one of the best known of East Atchison's reidents, and was highly esteemed.
From 1872 until about 12 years ago, Mr. Bailey was in the grocery business in East Atchison, the greater part of that time in partnership with Ermett Wells.
Mr. Bailey enjoyed good health until Saturday, when the stroke came which brought about his death.
Mr. Bailey was born in Fleming County, KY(SIC SHOULD READ MONROE CO, KY) in 1842. When a baby, he went with his parents, Mr. and Mrs. John Bailey, to Tennessee, and in 1852 they came up the Missouri river in Weston, establishing a homestead on the Sugar lake pass, where both his parents died.
There were ten children in the family of Mr. and Mrs. John Bailey, and A.J. Bailey was the last of them to pass away.
Surviving Mr. Bailey are his two sons, Samp Bailey, of near Sugar lake, and Ed Bailey, of East Atchison; 12 grandchildren, and four great grandchildren. His wife died 12 years ago.
Funeral services will be held Wednesday. The time and place will be announced in the Globe tomorrow.
