Catherine Thompson, called Kate, was a daughter of Alexander Thompson. She was born circa 1790, and died sometime in the 1850s. She married Joseph Starnes (c.1787-1850s). He was a son of David Starnes & Barbara Starns.

Catherine and Joseph had at least six children:

1. Barbara Starnes (16 Nov. 1814-22 April 1904) m. Valentine "Phelt" Starnes (c.1808-1879) Chidren: John Starnes, Jane Starnes, Mary "Polly" Starnes, Elena Starnes, Samuel Starnes, Caswell C. Starnes, Stewart Starnes.

2. Mahalia "Mahaley" Starnes (13 Feb. 1818-7 July 1908) m. John W. Ghent (d. 1894) in 1851, lived & died in Lancaster Co., SC. Children: Joseph P. Ghent, Wiliam H. Ghent, John W. Ghent, Thomas L. Ghent, Loraine Ghent, and Benjamin F. Ghent.

3. David A. Starnes (5 Jan. 1821-1891) m. Mary "Polly" Stewart in 1861. He was a CSA soldier. One son, John Brice Starnes.

4. Caswell Smith Starnes (19 April 1825-7 June 1915) m. Harried McMurray, in 1853, lived & died in Lancaster Co., SC. Children: Missouri Starnes, William Durand Starnes, Harriet Margaret Starnes, Samuel Harper Starnes, and George Simeon Starnes.

5. John E. Starnes (26 Jan. 1828-23 Sept. 1914) CSA soldier m. Margaret R. Starnes (daug. of Valentine M. & Elizabeth Richardson Starnes). Children: Sarah Eugenia Starnes (m. John Brice Starnes) and Mittie Starne s(m. Hugh Starnes).

6. Zachariah Starnes (c.1829-c.1868) CSA soldier, m. Margaret Montgomery Ghent. Children: Mary Starnes, James Monroe Starnes, Melva Starnes, Margaret J. Starnes, Hugh A. Starnes.
