Mr. Herbert Simon Hirshberg, 76, librarian and editorial consultant of the Encyclopedia Americana and a nationally known library official, died Thursday in Winter Park Memorial Hospital after a short illness.
He moved here nine years ago from Cleveland following his retirement as dean of the school of library science and director of libraries at Western Reserve University and lived at 788 Bonita Dr., Winter Park. Since coming here he had been chairman of the board of directors of the Winter Park Library. Mr. Hirshberg was born in Boston, graduated from Harvard University in 1900 and had been in library work in Boston, New York, Cleveland, Akron, Ohio, and Columbus, Ohio. He was a former president of the Ohio Library Assn. and was a member of the American Library Assn. and the Florida Library Assn. Mr. Hirshberg belonged to the Harvard Club, the Rowfant Club of Cleveland and the Winter Park University Club and was listed in Who's Who in America. Surviving are his wife, Mrs. Blanche Lowe Hirshberg; four sons, Richard L. Hirshberg, Arlington, Va.; Robert L. Hirshberg, Bethesda, Md.; Herbert S. Hirshberg Jr., Manhattan Beach, Calif., and A. Walter Hirshberg, Shaker Heights, Ohio; a brother, Elliott Hirshberg, Oxnard, Calif.; a sister, Mrs. S. M. Jacobs, North Hollywood, Calif., and four grandchildren.
