Richard served the Union during the Civil War, Company F, 142 Ohio Infantry, from 2 May 1864, to 2 September 1864. His term of service was for one hundred days. He was promoted from Private to Corporal. Richard and Rebecca had at least three children. Two died in infancy, Dessie and Carrie, Lincoln Ellsworth had his own family and is buried in York Cemetery, Logan County, Ohio.
