US Congressman. He attended the College of William and Mary in Virginia, but left before graduating to to join the Revolutionary Army, serving as a captain. Following the war, he studied law, was admitted to the bar, and established a practice in Clarke and surrounding counties, Virginia. He served in the Virginia House of Delegates and was elected as a Federalist to Congress, serving a single term, from 1799 to 1801. He returned to his legal practice and the life of a Virginia planter.
