J. B. Prewitt, 96, of Ralls passed away Saturday, June 19, 2010 at Carillon House in Lubbock. J. B. was born in Bronte, Texas June 17, 1914.
He graduated from Ralls High School in 1931 and attended Texas Tech. On February 4, 1940 J. B. married Katherine Johnston, daughter of V. A. and Mae Johnston. He worked in the United States Post Office until he volunteered for the United States Air Force before the attack on Pearl Harbor, serving from 1942 to 1945. At the close of World War II, they returned to Cone, Texas to farm. In 1949, they moved to Ralls and reared their three children. J. B. was active in Boy Scouts, First United Methodist Church, the community and school. In 1950 he and Earl C. Abell formed a partnership as Abell Prewitt Implement Company. Earl C. was a dear friend. With V. A., J. B. and Katherine became very active in the oil and gas business. In earlier days they played lots of bridge with their friends, they also loved fishing, until giving up their lake home at Toledo Bend in 1998.
J. B. was preceded in death by his loving wife Katherine Johnston Prewitt on August 21, 2005. Also preceding him in death are his parents David Edward and Blanche Louvenia Gideon Prewitt; two brothers, Marvin and Ira, one sister, Grace Collier , a grandson, Bryan Tomlin, nephew, Terry Chesser and a niece, Marjorie Morris.
He is survived by his loving family, a son David A. Prewitt and wife Sherry of Ralls; two daughters, Judith K. Tomlin and husband David of Midland and Joanne Gray and husband Steve of Ralls, grandchildren Yvonna Wurster Sheppard and husband Tommy of Midland, Gregory Prewitt and wife Eva of Pleasanton, Calif., Paige Prewitt of Ralls, John F. Wurster ad wife Tami of San Angelo, Bryan Wurster and wife Teresa of Aubrey, Texas, Geoff Gray and wife April of Seminole, Katherine R. Wurster and Kellie of Midland, Barrett Gray of Lubbock, Michael Willet of Houston, Mark Willet of Ralls and great grandchildren; Katrina Yarborough, James, Karyssa and Kaylin Wurster, Ciara, Holly and Heather Sheppard, Nic Townsend, Keldon, Kaighan, Keaton and Karson Gray and Hayden Willet. Also surviving are nephew, Mike Chesser of Austin, Nieces, Francis Austin and husband Don of Lubbock, Patsy Thomas and husband Tom of Arlington, Pat Chesser of Santa Fe, NM and many friends.
J. B. had a quick wit and sense of humor. He never met anyone he didn't like. He was so loved by his family and will be greatly missed by all who knew him. "J. B. and Katherine felt they had been very fortunate to have had the opportunity to live in a community like Ralls."
"Dear Father, give me the strength to fish for many years to come. Help me to use good sportsmanship and also to have fun. And when the final cast is made and the fishing pole laid down, I'll say thank you with a smile, death God and never with a frown. Please catch me in your landing net to take my final sleep, and then, oh lord, may I be judged as big enough to keep."
