Fern spent much of her childhood helping her mother care for the younger children in the family. At an older age, Fern decided that she wanted to become a nurse like her grandmother Elizabeth Hart, though she was never able to do so because of a heart condition.
Fern met her future husband, Henry Higley, while she was still a teenager. The two were married February 10th, 1934 in Farmington, Utah. Fern and Henry had a total of nine children.
Her husband died in 1980. He and Fern had been married for 46 years.
Fern died in 1999, at the age of 84.
