College professor and scholar of Folklore. Wrote several books, taught college level folklore, English, Shakespeare, mythology. Worked for his Aunt Columbia as the telephone lineman while attending Jr. High School. "Ran away from home" and joined the Army, served in Hawaii for 3 years during peace time. Returned to finish high school in Pikeville, KY where a romance began between he and Edith. Spent much of the time from first married until last child born going to school at: Univ of Iowa, Iowa City; Chapel Hill, NC; Univ of KY, Lexington; Berea, KY; Brevard, GA. Followed the methods/theories of Seth Thompson, receiving PhD in English at UK. Taught band, track and ROTC to try to keep from being drafted during WW II. Some other jobs to support attending school: soda jerk, bridge builder, saxophone player in jazz band, carpenter, high school teacher, track and field coach, swimming coach. He once told daughter Lynneda that he had straight "A's" throughout college and graduate school. Taught at several colleges: Berea, Brevard, Union, Morehead, WV Wesleyan, Pikeville. He was also the author of 7 books and numerous articles on folklore and folk songs, as well as editor for many historical publications. In addition, he served on the board of several national, regional and local historical societies. Prior to his death he was director of the Appalachian Studies Program at Pikeville College. He was killed instantly when hit broadside by a semi truck while going to the local post office. Edith was at home, taking a break from attending to her ailing parents, and helping him "put in" the garden.
