Jane (Crawford) Baird Erikson
-- Naples, FL. A former long-time resident of Seville and Wadsworth, Jane Baird Erikson (nee Crawford), age 91, passed away from natural causes in Naples, FL. Preceded in death by her husbands, James H. Baird and Clifford Erikson. She is survived by her son James R. Baird ("Randy") and his wife Patti (Sardinha) of Naples, FL; daughter Ellen Baird Gordon and her husband Neil of Naples; four grandchildren; and six great grandchildren. Jane passed on June 4th, 2010 with her daughter Ellen at her side and Neil and Patti nearby.

In addition to providing love and guidance to generations of her family and a family of friends, Jane will be remembered for her love of learning, travel, and tennis, a game she learned as a girl on the courts near her aunt Beatrice Bostwick's home in Chippewa Lake. Jane went on to play first singles for the University of New Mexico during her undergraduate years, and the sport continued to be an enjoyment for her into her eighties. In New Mexico, Jane also took up fencing and learned to fly an airplane at a time when few women did.

After earning her degree, Jane was a career educator, first teaching English at Medina Junior High in 1940. World War II interrupted her career when she traveled to Savanna, Georgia to be with her husband during his military service. After the war years, they returned home to restore Jane's ancestral home, the old Crawford farm house (1815) north of Seville, and to start a family. Her husband James was an expert horseman, and from the days of their early romance in Chippewa Lake, riding was a part of their lives. Those who passed the old Crawford farm would often see Jane and James on horseback, later to be joined by their growing children.

Jane renewed her career in 1954 at Westfield High School in Westfield and remained through the Cloverleaf Schools consolidation. To this day, many of her former students from this era remember her fondly as a teacher who worked to help each student to reach his or her full potential. At the same time, Jane continued her education with an emphasis on guidance counseling and eventually earned a masters degree in this area. In 1963, Jane went to work for Wadsworth City Schools to become a guidance counselor for Wadsworth High, where many of her peers regarded her as the finest counselor ever to work there. She helped countless students with problems great and small and worked tirelessly to help students to realize their dreams.

After her retirement in 1978, Jane moved to Naples, Florida where she volunteered at Naples Community Hospital and became heavily involved in Navy League. Her love of life-long learning and books still remained with her while retirement enabled her to pursue her passion for travel. Jane traveled with family or friends to every continent and was a member of the Circumnavigators Club. Her highlights included Ellen in Australia and seeing the Great Wall of China, the green mountains of Scotland, and the ice of Antarctica. In her mid eighties, Jane declared that she had been everywhere she had wanted to go. To Jane's delight in her later years, the miles that had often separated her from her children ended when they both settled into homes mere minutes from hers.

Now that Jane has made her final journey, this remarkable lady will be greatly missed and fondly remembered. Interment will be at Mound Hill Cemetery in Seville next to her husband James in a private family ceremony (July 5th at 10:00 a.m.). A celebration of the life of Jane Baird Erikson, officiated by Rev. Donna Marie Hohman, will be held at 11:00 a.m. on July 5th at the former Crawford farm, now a Medina County Park.
