THRASHER, Calvin ..."Mr. THRASHER was interviewed at his home, 530 S. Fifth St., Corvallis, Oregon. At the age of 83, Mr. THRASHER is still conducting an insurance business. He said: "My father, was Thomas THRASHER and my mother's maiden name was Annie THRASHER. I do not think she was in any way related to father before they were married. They came from Missouri in 1852, and settled first in Polk County. After a little time they went to Douglas County and took a donation land claim not far from Roseburg. I was born there in 1858. In 1864 father moved to Linn County, where he bought a store at Boston Mills about a mile and one half east of the place where Shedd is now. There was a big flour mill there and a carding mill. About 1866 we moved to South Beach on Yaquina Bay in what is now Lincoln county, where father had another store. Again we moved up the bay to Mill Creek, a short distance above Toledo, where he still ran a store. My brother and I went to school by boat.
"I started to school while we lived in Linn County. My teacher there was a Mr. FLETCHER. As south Beach we had little opportunity for school. I finished my education at Toledo. I worked for a time on a steamer on the bay. My Mary Hall was a propeller boat; another boat was a stern wheeler. I came to Corvallis when I was seventeen. In 1876 I married Arabella PALMER. For a time I worked at what I could get to do. At one time I had a farm on the breaks of the John Day River, west of Condon, Oregon. I have farmed in Benton County, and since getting too old for the farm I am working at the insurance game."
