William J. Cox Jr., 87, of Mattoon, passed away 6:45 p.m. Saturday, June 5, 2010 at Sarah Bush Lincoln Health Center.
Funeral services celebrating his life will be held 11:30 a.m. Tuesday at the Mitchell-Jerdan Funeral Home with William Beese officiating. Interment will follow in Calvary Cemetery. Visitation will be from 10:00 am until the time of service Tuesday at the funeral home.
William was born March 27, 1923 in Terre Haute, Indiana; the son of William and Anna (Byrnes) Cox. He married Lydia M. Begin on January 31, 1951 at Terre Haute, Indiana. She preceded him in death on August 12, 2006. He is survived by his children, Robert J. Cox and wife Judy of Lerna, IL, Timothy L. Cox of Sealy, TX, Carol Behl and husband Richard of Mattoon, Marie R. Eveland of Mattoon, IL, Louise Dodd and husband William of Allenville, IL Patricia Icenogle of Azle, TX and Billie C. Burnham and husband Wesley of Rossville, Georgia; twenty-eight grandchildren, seventy great-grandchildren and twelve great great grandchildren. He was preceded in death by three sons, three daughter's one great- granddaughter, two brothers and two sisters.
William attended Kingdom Hall of Jehovah's Witnesses. He had been employed in the construction business, prior to his retirement. He enjoyed spending time with his family and he never met a stranger and children were always drawn to him as a loving grandfather figure in the church.
