Author, Screenwriter. His screenplay for "The French Connection" (1971) won the Academy Award for "best adapted screenplay", a Golden Globe Award, a Writers Guild of America Award, a Peabody, and Edgar Award. Best known for his novels featuring the African-American character, police detective "John Shaft", he won the NAACP Award for novels featuring the character. The books were titled "Shaft", "Shaft Among the Jews", "Shaft's Big Score", "Shaft Has a Ball", "Goodbye Mr. Shaft", "Shaft's Carnival of Killers", and "The Last Shaft". He co-wrote the screenplay for the film version of "Shaft" with John D. F. Black and wrote the film sequel entitled "Shaft's Big Score" in 1972. He wrote the Clint Eastwood film "High Plains Drifter" (1973), the Chuck Norris film "A Force of One" and the made-for-television film "Guyana Tragedy: The Story of Jim Jones" (1980) for which he won an Emmy nomination. He was married four times and had four sons named Benjamin, Nathanial, Adam and Nicholas. His second wife was writer Susan Katherine Gould and his fourth wife was singer Chris Clark who he married in 1982. Clark was an Oscar-nominated screenwriter and they were married only two years when he died in London from complications of a perforated ulcer. A horse-drawn carriage was used at his funeral. He was survived by his last wife Chris, his four sons, and his mother, Catherine.
