On April 29, 1999, Ernest Wright GALLOP peacefully departed this life in his home on Hermitage Point, Virginia Beach. Mr. GALLOP was born on August 30, 1918, to Lydia POYNER and John Calvin GALLOP, II in Poplar Branch, N.C. After high school he entered refrigeration and air conditioning training in Atlanta, Georgia, and remained there for four years. He then returned to Norfolk, Virginia, to join the staff of Colonial Stores, Inc. Here he remained as manager of construction, installation, and maintenance for the Eastern Division until his retirement in 1982. A U.S. Navy veteran serving in World War II, Mr. GALLOP was active in civic affairs. He was a past president of the Refrigeration Service Engineers Society and past commodore of the Great Bridge Cruising Club. He was a member of Bayside Christian Church for 40 years, where he served on many boards including chairman of the Board of Trustees, chairman of the Board of Deacons, and a deacon emeritus of the church. He was a life member of Bayside Lions Club, where he had been a member for 40 years; a recipient of the Melvin Jones Fellow Award, and served for the past eight years as chairman of the hearing and speech committee. He was a loving husband, father, grandfather, brother, uncle, and a friend to many. He will be sorely missed. He was predeceased by two brothers and four sisters. He leaves to cherish his memory his high school sweetheart, Erlene SAWYER, who became his wife 55 years ago; his beloved daughter Jane Gallop NEWBERN and her husband John Melvin NEWBERN; two grandchildren whom he adored, John Norris NEWBERN and Krystal Jane NEWBERN, all of whom reside in Chesapeake; a brother John Calvin GALLOP, III of Norfolk,; a special sister and brother-in-law Pearl and Gardner PRITCHARD of Elizabeth City, N.C.; and a host of nieces and nephews. A funeral will be conducted at 2 p.m. Sunday at Bayside Christian Church, 2224 Greenwell Road, Virginia Beach, by the Rev. Dr. Chris XENAKIS, pastor of the church. Burial will follow in Rosewood Memorial Park. The family will receive friends from 7 to 8:30 today at Hollman Brown Funeral Home, Bayside Chapel, and at other times at 4144 Hermitage Point, Virginia Beach. In lieu of flowers, memorial donations may be made to the Bayside Christian Church Memorial fund or to the American Cancer Society. (The Virginian Pilot - c. May 1, 1999)
