Arnold Edward Smith

Arnold Edward Smith, 88, of Polk County, passed away Thursday, June 10, 2010, in an Etowah hospital.

He served in the U.S. Army during World War II.

He was retired from the construction business and the Polk County Board of Education. He was also a 32nd degree Mason and a member of the Reliance Masonic Lodge. He was an avid fisherman.

He was a member of Cambria Baptist Church.

He was preceded in death by his wife, Mary Hayes Smith; and parents, Joseph and Oma Jane Chambers Smith.

Survivors include his sons: Chris Smith and wife, Amanda, and Ronnie Smith and wife, Phyllis, all of Benton, and James Smith and wife, Valerie, of Ocoee; daughters: Debbie Passmore and husband, Alan, of Maryville, Shannon Wilcox and husband, Johnny, of Benton, and Sandy Allen of Clinton; 13 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; two great-great-grandchildren; sister, Delzie Blair of Etowah; Leroy Smith of Reliance; and several nieces and nephews.

The funeral was held at 7 p.m. Saturday, June 12, 2010, in the chapel of Higgins Funeral Home with the Rev. Homer Belcher and the Rev. Joel Jenkins officiating.

A graveside service will be held at 2 p.m. today. June 13, 2010, at Cambria Church Cemetery with Samuel Smith, Caleb Norwood, Joshua Norwood, Jacob Passmore, Terry Blair and Rick Smith serving as pallbearers.

A white dove release ceremony will conclude the service.
