Thomas F Campbell was the son of Hugh Campbell and Cheney Ray. His paternal grandfather was one of five brothers who came from Scotland prior to the Revolutionary War and served as a soldier in the struggle for independence.

Thomas was 7 years old when his parents moved to Henry County, Iowa. He was a veteran of the Civil War. On Mar 26 1864 he enlisted as a Private at the age of 21. He enlisted in Co K 4th Iowa Cavalry on Apr 14 1864 and mustered out on Aug 8 1865 at Atlanta, GA.

When he was discharged he returned to Iowa and resumed the occupation of farming. He farmed land north of Mt. Pleasant from 1867 to 1892, when he sold his farm and moved to Mount Pleasant. He was one of the organizers of the Henry County Farmer's Mutual Insurance Company and served as President starting in 1902.

On Jan 8 1868 Thomas married Hattie E Dutton and they had 6 known children: Hugh, Ada, Susan, Alice, Carrie, and Bessie.
