Mrs. Barbara N. Hickox, 76, of Waycross died Thursday night at Satilla Regional Medical Center. She was born in Toledo, Ohio to the late Hubert A. Nodine and Dr. Della Hickox Nodine. Mrs. Hickox had made Waycross her home since 1949. She earned an Associate's Degree from Waycross Junior College as a member of the 2nd graduating class, then continued on and earned a Master's Degree in Education from Valdosta State University in 1982. She began her teaching career at McDonald Street School in 1970 and taught there until 1980. She then moved to Bacon County High School until returning to McDonald Street School in 1988. She taught there until her retirement in 1995 after 24 ½ years of service.

Mrs. Hickox served as President of the Waycross Lions Club, the Ladies Auxiliary to Veteran's of Foreign Wars, the Military Order of the Cootie Auxiliary #59, was a Past President of District #8 American Legion Auxiliary, Past President of District #14 Ladies Auxiliary V.F.W., Veteran's of Foreign Wars, American Legion Auxiliary, Okefenokee Chapter #474 Order of the Eastern Star and the American Association of University Women. She was a life member of Disabled American Veteran's, Waycross Ware County Retired Teacher's Association, and the International and Georgia Reading Association. Along with her parents she was preceded in death by her husband, James W. Hickox.

Mrs. Hickox is survived by three daughters, Teresa Rowell of Waycross, Denise Rowell Middleton and her husband Tracy of Waycross, Gail Mitchell of Monterey California, two sons, Curt Rowell of Fonda, NY, Jody Hickox of Waycross, three grandchildren, Melanie Tatum and her husband Justin of Waycross, Jessica Rowell of Fonda, NY, Christa Baynard and her husband Nate of Fonda, NY, one great granddaughter, Kaylin Marie Tatum of Waycross, numerous step grandchildren and step great grandchildren and numerous other relatives.

A service celebrating the life of Barbara Hickox will be held Friday, June 25, 2010 at 6:00pm in the Miles-Odum Funeral Home Chapel. The family will receive friends at the funeral home beginning at 5:00pm.

Memorial contributions may be made to the Waycross Lions Camp for the Blind, 5626 Laura Walker Road, Waycross, Georgia 31503.
