Mrs. William DeBruyn died at her home, 711 E. Second Street, at 7:30 a.m. Friday, February 4, 1916. Her age was 76 years, 2 months, and 4 days. The Immediate cause of her death was erysipelas Induced by cancer, with which she had long been a sufferer. Her last Illness had been serious for about two months. Mrs. DeBruyn was born in Breukel, Province of Utrecht, Netherlands. She came with her parents to America when she was 15 years old. This was in 1855, when Pella was a pioneer town, and in common with the other early settlers, she experienced the trials of pioneer life. She has been a continuous resident of Pella for 61 years. During all this time she never was farther away from the city than Ottumwa and Des Moines, going once to Ottumwa to market in an early day, making the trip overland and making two tips to Des Moines in recent years to receive medical aid. Her maiden name was Alida Smorenburg. She was married to William DeBruyn in 1861, and to them were born thirteen children, of whom eight are still living. They are Mrs. Kate Baer, Mr. A. W. DeBruyn, Mrs. Marie Verught, W. W. DeBruyn, Mrs. Ollle DeBruyn, John W. DeBruyn, Bert W. DeBruyn and Louis W. DeBryun. These all live in Pella except W. W. DeBruyn, head of the agricultural department at the Roe Indian Institute at Wichita, Kansas. She leaves five grandchildren, Miss Ethel Ries, George W. Ries. Will T. Baer, Will W. DeBruyn, all of Pella and Frank Baer of Richmond Ind., one brother, C. Smorenburg and one sister, Mrs. W. W. Cook, of Pella. All were present at the funeral except W.W. DeBruyn who was detained at home by the illness and Mr. and Mrs. Frank E. Baer who were unable to be present owing to the distance. Funeral services were held Monday, February 7th, at the home at 1:00 p. m. and at the Second Reformed church at 1:30, conducted by her Pastor Rev. B. F. Brinkman. Interment was at Oakwood cemetery.

Card of Thanks. We wish in this way to thank the friends and neighbors for their aid in our mother's sickness and their kind sympathy at the time of her death. We especially are grateful for the floral offerings to her memory and for the sentiment that Inspired them. The DeBruyn Children-Pella Chronicle. February 10, 1916
