Deseret News Obituary
9/13/09 ~ 12/14/02

Thomas Melvin Haymond, beloved husband, father, grandfather, and great grandfather passed away on December 14, 2002 after a long and abundant life of 93 years.

Mell was born on September 13, 1909 in Springville, Utah, to Solon Earl and Mary Emma Marchbanks Haymond. He was the fourth child in the family of six boys and one girl. He spent a happy childhood growing up in Springville and later in Mapleton when his parents bought a home and farm on Mapleton bench. He had many interesting experiences working with his father and brothers on the family ranch on Billy's Mountain in Spanish Fork Canyon.

The local schools of Mapleton and Springville contributed to his education and he made many life-long friends through his activities. At Springville High School, he participated in athletics, drama, and politics. He was the captain of the football team, and during his senior year was Mayor of the school. He graduated in May 1929, and afterwards attended Brigham Young University for two years, where he was again active in athletics and played on the football team. While working on construction for J.W. Whiting Construction Company, during his high school years, Mell started dating Maurine Whiting. On June 26, 1933, they were married in the Salt Lake Temple. To them were born three children: Jay, Tom and Barbara. In October 1944, after a long illness, Maurine passed away. Later, Dad became acquainted with a local school teacher, Vivian Jorgensen, from American Fork, Utah, and they were married in the Idaho Falls Temple on June 3, 1947.

To them were born two children: Mary and Dan. Vivian passed away on November 19,1983.

In 1939, Mell joined with Harold and Verl Whiting, his brothers-in-law, to form Whiting & Haymond Construction Company. For 35 years they built roads, airports, and excavations for buildings in five western states, including Utah, Idaho, Arizona, Nevada and Wyoming. Some of the more notable projects they completed included the highway through Capitol Reef National Park, the Flaming Gorge project from building the first road in the area, to clearing the Dutch John town site, and building the roads to the dam site. They built the first highway (now I-15) cut through the mountain entering St. George from the East, and participated without compensation in the excavation of the site for the BYU Football Stadium.

Mell was an active member of the LDS Church, where he faithfully served in many positions, including Bishop of the Ninth Ward, Kolob Stake, and Stake High Councilman. Over the years he particularly enjoyed attending the Temple. Whenever he had work near a temple, he would attend as often as possible. He was set apart as a sealer in the Provo Temple by Gordon B. Hinckley and served in that position from 1984 until 1989.

He enjoyed working in his yard growing flowers and harvesting his garden and fruit trees. He was an avid fan of BYU football and basketball games. Earlier in his life he was active in community affairs. He served in several civic and service organizations including the Lions Club and Junior Chamber of Commerce. Dad had a great attitude about life and was loved and respected by his children and their spouses, grandchildren, and great grandchildren.

He is survived by his five children: Jay M. and Pat Haymond, Macomb, IL.; Thomas N. and Raenee Haymond, Provo; Barbara and Joel Norton, Orem; Mary and Richard Lambert, Salt Lake, and Daniel E. and Dale Haymond, Houston, TX: brothers Lacell Haymond, Salt Lake, and Howard Haymond, Springville: half brothers L Wood Haymond, Springville, and Dean Haymond, Island Park, ID: half sister Beverly Christian, Hayden Lake, ID.: step brother Preston Hooper, Mapleton and step sisters Marie Kari, Springville, and Rosalie Killpack, Provo. He is also survived by 21 grandchildren, and 24 great grandchildren. Mell was preceded in death by his parents, three brothers Lavon, Edwin (Ted), Paul, and a sister, Bernece.

The family would like to express their thanks to those care givers who helped Dad the last few years: Dr. Jeffery Johnson, Dr. Gary Matthews, staff members at Vista Hospice Care, Stonewood Manor, and Orem Nursing & Rehabilitation Center.

Thanks to all of you for your loving care and support.

Funeral services will be held Thursday, Dec. 19, 2002 at 11 a.m. in the Ninth Ward Chapel, 55 North Main, Springville. Friends and family may call Wednesday, Dec. 18, 2002 from 6-8 p.m. at the Wheeler Mortuary, 211 E. 200 S., Springville or Thursday one hour prior to the services at the Church.
