Mrs. Adelia Irby

Funeral services for Mrs. Adelia Irby, 90, of Durant were held at 10 a.m. Monday, March 27 at First Baptist Church in Durant. Officiating ministers were Rev. Ed McDaniel and Rev. Jerry Bishop. Interment was in Mizpah Cemetery in Durant.

Mrs. Irby died of heart failure Saturday, March 25 at University Hospital in Durant.

A native of Holmes County and the widow of the late Mr. R. E. Irby of Durant, she was a retired merchant and member of First Baptist Church of Durant.

The late Mr. Irby began the R.E. Irby Co. in 1919 (the oldest business in Durant) and after their wedding. Mrs. Irby joined her husband in this venture in 1924. She retired from the business in 1989.

Mr. and Mrs. Irby were longtime dedicated members and supporters of First Baptist Church. Mrs. Irby was a faithful choir member for most of her life.

Mrs. Irby was a member of the Durant Business & Professional Womens Club for 30 years before having to resign due to illness. During her days in the B&PW Club she was awarded the Woman of Achievement Award, the highest honor a local chapter can bestow on a member. The award recognized her for excelling in club, community and church activities.

Survivors include: three sons, Robert E. Irby, Jr. William F. Irby, and Charlie W. Irby, all of Durant; seven grandchildren; and nine great-grandchildren.

Serving as pallbearers were Deacon Irby, David Irby, Robert E. Irby, III, Earl Maddux, Joey Upton and Chip Horne.
