The son of Dorsey W. Viers and Elizabeth A. (Huston) Viers. He later had a step-mother named Harriet A. Viers. James was a farmer who moved from Jefferson County to Coventry Township, Ohio sometime around 1840. James married twice. First marriage, at age 19 was on July 2, 1837 to Elizabeth Allen. James and Elizabeth had four children, Charles Washington, William, Eleanor and Angeline. After Elizabeth's death, he married Octavia Charlotte Fairbanks in 1854. He lived in Norton, Ohio at the time of his death at the age of 55.
