PAYNE Jr., Leonard B., age 77 of Maryville, passed away Thursday, October 4, 2001, at his home. He was a member of Hillcrest Baptist Church where he served as Deacon, taught Sunday School and was Choir Director for 48 years. He retired from Air Flow Engineering in Knoxville.

He was a veteran of World War II and was a top-flight turret gunner for torpedo bombers in the Naval Air Force. He was a longtime member and supporter of the Gideons International.

He was preceded in death by his parents, Leonard Sr., and Bertha Boring Payne, brother, Don Payne and brother-in-law, James W. Hitch.

Survivors include: wife, Margaret Bradley Payne; son, Jack L. Payne and wife, Ann; daughters, Deborah Payne Caughron and husband Phil of Maryville and Tammy Payne Smith of Georgia; grandchildren, Stephanie and Jason Payne, Justin Caughron, Cody, Catherine, Cindy, Cassie and Cory Smith; brother, James Payne and wife Peggy of Chattanooga; sisters, Jean Abbott and husband Willard, Joyce Russell and husband Mack, Shirley Hitch, Betty Burns and husband Jim all of Maryville; brothers-in-law and sisters-in-law, Joan Payne, Luke and Sally Bradley, Gertie Bradley, Mamie Sue and Burl Best, Anna Mae Hickman all of Maryville, Zula and Les Michaud of Florida; many nieces and nephews.

Funeral services will be held at 8:00 p.m. Saturday in McCammon-Ammons-Click Funeral
Home Chapel with Rev. Carl White officiating. The interment will be at 2:00 p.m. Sunday in Grandview Cemetery.

The family will receive friends from 6-8:00 p.m. Saturday at McCammon-Ammons-Click
