Opera Singer. She was a noted soprano of the late 19th Century. Born Emma Antonia Joanna Von Juch to well-off family who had become American citizens and settled in Detroit, she was raised in New York City from age two. Juch pursued voice lessons and a concert career against the wishes of her father, who did, however, relent after hearing her perform in recital. She made her operatic debut at 18 as Philine in an Italian version of Ambrose Thomas' "Mignon"; after singing for one season at Her Majesty's Theatre, London, she had her American bow at New York's Academy of Music in 1881. Joining the American Opera Company in 1886, she earned good reviews, but when the group folded, she started her own Emma Juch Company. Juch designed her own costumes, importing some from Paris, and supervising the making of others by Wanamaker's in Philadelphia. Her ensemble toured throughout the United States, with Juch receiving praise as Mignon, as the title lead of Bizet's "Carmen", and as Marguerite from Charles Gounod's "Faust". In 1894 she married attorney Francis Wellman (divorced 1911) and retired, living the remainder of her days in New York. She died of a stroke while attending a movie.
