Walter J. "Red" Fox, 87, of Pittsburg, died at 11:11 a.m. Tuesday, March 20, 2001, at Mt. Carmel Medical Center, after a short illness.

He was born Oct. 8, 1913, at Walnut, to James and Mary Shay Fox.

He attended area schools.

He married Esther M. George on Oct. 24, 1939, at Greenbush. She survives of the home.

Mr. Fox entered the U.S. Navy where he served in the Seabee's Construction Battalion during World War II.

He was the owner/operator of Fox Construction from 1945 to 1984, at which time he turned the business over to his son, Ed. He also was a rancher and cattleman.

Mr. Fox was instrumental in getting legislation passes that has transformed much of the mined land in southeast Kansas.

He was a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church; a charter member of the K.L.I. C.A., where he was past president; the Girard American Legion Post No. 26 and the VFW.

In addition to his wife, survivors include a son, Ed Fox of Girard; a daughter, Peggy Brodie of rural Pittsburg; a sister, Margaret F. Snyder of Oak Ridge, Tenn.; six grandchildren; a step-granddaughter; and eight great-grandchildren.

He was preceded in death by two sisters, Roselle Call and Gertrude Fitzgerald; and two brothers, Francis and Lawrence Fox.

Burial will follow at the Garden of Memories Cemetery.

Parish rosary will be recited at 7:30 p.m. today at the Friskel Funeral Home, with visitation to follow.

Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. today.

Arrangements are under the direction of the Friskel Funeral Home, 230 E. McKay, Frontenac.
