William was the son of Mr. and Mrs. Lyall Barnhart, who were residents of Oklahoma City in 1946. He graduated from Classen High School, in Oklahoma City, and Kemper Military Academy, Boonville, Missouri, in the spring of 1941. William was a member of Crown Heights Christian Church, of Oklahoma City. He joined the Army on March 15, 1942 and arrived in Europe in September, 1944. While serving with the 10th Armored Division at Bastogne he was killed in action. Decorations and awards: Order of the Purple Heart with two Oak Leaf Clusters, the Bronze Star, the Silver Star and a Certificate of Merit for the defense of Bastogne during the Battle of the Bulge.
