Lance Cpl. Derek Hernandez, 20, of Edinburg, Texas died June 6 while supporting combat operations in Helmand province, Afghanistan. He was assigned to 3rd Battalion, 1st Marine Regiment, 1st Marine Division, I Marine Expeditionary Force, Camp Pendleton, Calif. Derek was serving as a military policeman. He enlisted in the United States Marine Corps in July of 2008. He is preceded in death by his maternal grandfather, Hector Reyna and his paternal grandmother, Lazara Hernandez LCpl. Hernandez is survived by his mother, Virginia Reyna; his father, Israel (Cynthia) Hernandez; two brothers, Israel (Dacia) Hernandez Jr. and Devin Israel Hernandez; a sister, Erica M. Hernandez; maternal grandmother, Eva M. Reyna; paternal grandfather, Francisco Hernandez.
