Alexander Stephens Mitchell, called Stephens, was the second of three children born to Eugene Muse Mitchell (1866-1944) and his wife Mary Isabel "Maybelle" Stephens (1872-1919). He had an elder brother, Russell Stephens Mitchell (1894-1894) and a sister, Margaret Munnerlyn Mitchell (1900-1949) who wrote "Gone with the Wind."
Stephens attended the University of Georgia, where he was a member of Beta Delta Chapter of Delta Tau Delta Fraternity. Like his father before him, he became a well known and wildely respected lawyer and historian in Atlanta.
On 3 May 1927, Stephens married Miss Caroline Louise Reynolds (21 May 1902-30 Aug. 1950), called Carrie Lou. She was a daughter of Joseph Shewmake Reynolds and his wife Fannie Hansberger, orignally from Augusta, who moved to Atlanta in 1916. Her brother was Glascock Reynolds (1903-1967), a noted artist.
Stephens and Carrie Lou lost one child to a miscarriage in the first year of their marriage. Subsequently, they had two sons, Eugene Muse Mitchell (6 April 1931-8 Aug. 2007, m. Virginia, lived in Michigan) and Joseph Reynolds Mitchell. Carrie Lou died in 1950, and in 1952, Mr. Mitchell maried Miss Anita Benteen (12 Aug. 1902-25 Apr. 1978).
Stephens Mitchell was president of the Atlanta Bar Association, the editor of the "Atlanta Historical Society Bulletin," a member of the Catholic Layman's Association, a member of the Sacred Heart Catholic Church, Atlanta, and the Vincentian Society (Society of St. Vincent De Paul). He was a devout Catholic and devoted much time and engergy to charitable and philanthropic endeavors.
