Fred Ford Baker was born February 13, 1927, in a tent in Panhandle, TX, and died February 6, 2010, a week before his 83rd birthday. He was preceded in death by his brother, John Price Baker. He is survived by his wife, Mary Jean Buzbee Baker, his sister-in-law, Betty Baker, of Plant City, FL, and his sister, Norma Jean Ballard, of Oklahoma City, OK. He met Mary Jean in 1943 in the Civil Air Patrol. They married on September 22, 1945, in Oklahoma City and enjoyed 64 years together. He served in the U.S. Army at the end of World War II in occupied Japan. He was a lover of antique cars and had a 1959 and a 1960 El Camino which he had restored and adored. He was Daddy to 6 children: Bobi Moore and her husband Ron of Portland, OR, Liz Roark and her husband Mike of Owasso, OK, Skip Baker of Del Rio, TX, Paul Baker and his wife Caroline of Oklahoma City, OK, Tom Baker and his wife Denise of Moore, OK, and Sherri Haskins and her husband Ronnie of Del City, OK. He was Pawpaw to 25 grandchildren: Vicki Baker, Bryn, Julianna, Anna, & Lesa Moore, Sarah & Jeff Blomgren, Ruth Roark, Ben & Aimee Roark, Rachel & Ryan Cooper, David & Sarah Roark, Esther & Caleb Consalvi; James & Jennifer Baker, Michael Baker; Khara & Brad Adams, Matthew Taylor, Stephanie Taylor; Stephanie & Mark Dunn, Sean & Jessica Baker, Ian Baker; Kristie & Jerry Weldon, Joseph & Sarah Wood, Naaman, Joshua, and Levi Wood, preceded in death by grandson Michael Taylor. He was also very proud of his 31 great grandchildren. Numerous nieces and nephews would come to him for help and counsel. Ford made his living as an electrician working for various companies before operating Baker Electric, Inc. from 1977-1991. In the mid 1950s he worked at University Hospital where he would sit on call outside the operating room during some of the first open heart surgeries in case they needed him to fix an electrical problem during this ground breaking procedure. He enjoyed overseeing the warehouse of his sons' company, Baker Brothers Electric Inc., for the last 6 years until the onset of his illness 3 weeks ago.
In 1990 he acknowledged Jesus as the forgiver of his sins and became a Christian. The change in his life was evident to all who knew him. He has been a member of Portland Avenue Baptist Church for 6 years where he served on the Finance Committee and president of his Sunday School class. Services for Ford will be held on Tuesday, February 9, at 3:00 p.m. at Portland Avenue Baptist Church, 1301 N. Portland. Interment will follow at Chapel Hill Cemetery, 8701 NW Expressway, Oklahoma City.
