Ole Aasen, Well Known Resident Died Saturday

Heart Disease Fatal to Pioneer, Funeral Rites Conducted Yesterday Afternoon

Ole Aasen, one of the best known of the older residents of this vicinity passed away Saturday [March 31] at the home of his daughter, Mrs. Oscar Eide. Death came only two days after he had passed his 89th birthday, and his illness was only of two days duration. Last fall he suffered an accident when he fractured a limb but otherwise had enjoyed splendid health until two days previous to his death. Death was caused by heart disease.

Mr. Aasen was born in Numedal, Norway March 28, 1849. In 1872 he was united in marriage to Miss Ingeborg Aasen, after which they made their home in Norway for a period of fourteen years. In 1886 they together with their children came to America to make their home. They came directly to Hatton where they purchased a farm about five miles west from this city. After retiring from active farming in 1919 Mr. and Mrs. Aasen moved into Hatton where they continued to live until Mrs. Aasen’s death, September 4, 1931. Mr. Aasen continued to live here for a time following his wife’s death, but during the past one and one-half years he made his home with his daughters, Mrs. John Mark and Mrs. Oscar Eide.

Deceased was an active member of the Goose River Church, which congregation he was affiliated with from the time he arrived here and until his death last week. In the congregation he took a very active interest and served as choir director there for many years and as Kirkesanger for more than thirty years.

Surviving are two daughters, Mrs. John Mark and Mrs. Oscar Eide, and six sons including an adopted son. They are Knute Aasen, Hatton, Ole Aasen, Clearbrook, Minnesota, Gilbert Aasen, Mayville, Louis Aasen, Grand Forks, Bernard Aasen, Hensel, N.D., and George Aasen. He also leaves fifty grandchildren and nearly fifty great-grandchildren.

Funeral services were held from the Knute Aasen home here yesterday afternoon, and from the Goose River Lutheran Church. Rev. A. J. Eikeland was in charge of the rites and burial was made in the Goose River Cemetery. The six sons acted as pallbearers. – Hatton Free Press, April 5, 1934
