Mrs. Alice Speaker
HITCHCOCK - Mrs. Alice Speaker, 81. of Hitchcock died Wednesday at Galveston County Memorial Hospital. Rosary will be recited at 8 p.m. Thursday. Funeral services will be held at 10 a.m. Friday. Friends may call at the funeral home after 1 p.m. Thursday.
Mrs. Speaker had lived in Hitchcock since 1915.
Survivors include five sons; Theodore, Louis, George. Herman, and Fred Speaker, Jr., 14 grandchildren and seven great grandchildren.
Pallbearers: Frank Kelemen, Sam Schiro. Bert Heller. Cecil Henckel, Louis M. Deu and Robert Speaker.

I found Alice, her parents Herman and Millie Meyer and her brother William listed in the 1900 Census for Galveston. I also located the marriage registered in the Lutheran Church in Galveston. The priest spelled the name Meier as well as where Herman was born in Germany. The official marriage certificate at the Galveston County Court House shows the last name as Weir. The M was mistaken for a W during transcription. Alice spelled the family name Meyer. Herman Meyer is on the probate papers.
I do remember her talking about living on a farm. Her dad was a travelling salesman and farmer. He had both a buggy and a wagon. This was uncommon which adds to the story that he was very successful.
Alice was a boarder at the Sacred Heart Academy at Market & 16th. St. when the 1900 Hurricane hit Galveston Island. I remember her talking about it but unfortunately I do not remember a lot of the specifics. I do remember that she lost several family members in the storm. I know her parents drowned in the 1900 storm but they not listed on the storm death roll. William probably did too since I have not found anything on him past the 1900 census. One sister (either half or step) was rescued floating in the Gulf. She was hanging on to a board that was being swept out to sea. I remember she had both half and step siblings but I have for found any records on them.
Her first husband was William Fulkerson of Galveston. They had one son. He changed his name to Speaker. See more about this under William Speaker.
She married her second husband Frederick Speaker of Galveston in 1906. Their children were: Theodore, Louis, Frederick, George, Herman and Millie.
