Mother at Rest

Mrs. David Matteson crosses the Dark River

After long weeks of suffering, and just when a few days of apparent improvement had given hope again, about 5 o'clock this morning, Mrs, Maryette Matteson, wife of the Ex-Mayor D. Matteson, passed peacefully away at the home in North Cedar. She was conscious almost to the last and met the dread messenger with the calmness of the Christian Faith. He death was caused by sarcoma of the hip and the disease caused great suffering which could not be allayed by the best of efforts of the physicians.

Mrs. Matteson was born in South Bristol, Ontario County, New York, August 9, 1841, being aged 55 years and 5 months. She was the daughter of Mr. Avery Brown now living near Manchester and a sister of Mrs. I. B. Dickenson, of Flora Township. When a child with her parents she moved to Delevan, Wis., where in September, 1860, she was married to David Matteson. Ten years later they went to Missouri and in 1873 they came to this county where has been their home since. She was past president and a charter member of the W. R.C. of this city and a prominent worker in the order. She joined the Methodist church when young and a serene faither in her Saviour has been the sustaining power of her character thorough all the years since. A loving mother and wife, a true friend, a steadfast Christian, a noble woman. Her death causes many saddened hearts among her wide circle of friends. The husband and five children, Charles D., Mrs. Jos. Laney, William A. Henry E. Nettie A. grieve for wife and mother departed and have the sympathy of all. Mrs. Laney had been with her mother for weeks but returned to her home near Talmage yesterday because the patient seemed stronger. Only the three younger children and the husband were at home at the end.

Funeral services will be held at the house at 2 p.m. Wednesday, Rev. Dr. Blayney officiating. The A.O. U. W. and G.A.R. of which Mr. Matteson is a member will attend in a body.
